PREVIEW: Beethoven helps trio of friends open ProMusica Chamber Orchestra’s 40th season

“The music of Ludwig van Beethoven is uniquely ubiquitous.

“Every child can sing Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony: ‘Ba-ba-ba-bum,’ ” said David Danzmayr, music director of ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. “In the European Union, our anthem is ‘Freude, schoner Gotter’ from the last movement of Beethoven 9. … You have ringtones with Beethoven melodies.”

Despite Beethoven’s seeming omnipresence, however, Danzmayr said that not every piece he composed was equally electrifying.

“I think some of his pieces are a little bit square,” Danzmayr said. “For me, the ‘Triple Concerto’ is a little bit like that.”

The music director’s reservations notwithstanding, ProMusica will perform Beethoven’s “Triple Concerto” as part of the opening concert of its 40th anniversary season. The performance will take place on Sunday in the Southern Theatre.”
