ProMusica’s “NAKED CLASSICS” Explores Schubert’s Symphony No. 10

Schubert’s work is deconstructed in accessible format through use of multimedia

(Columbus, OH) – Music Director David Danzmayr, host Paul Rissmann, and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra will delve into Franz Schubert’s rarely performed work, his Symphony No. 10, for the second of the two-concert “NAKED CLASSICS” series this season. NAKED CLASSICS: Schubert 10 will take place on Friday, April 21 at 8 p.m. at the Southern Theatre.

Launched in October 2016, ProMusica’s new NAKED CLASSICS series enhances the audience’s understanding of, and connection with, orchestral chamber music. The programs explore and deconstruct a classical masterwork in a fresh and accessible format, while delving into the fascinating aspects of the composer’s life and times. On April 21, the orchestra will investigate the unfinished sketches of what became Schubert’s Symphony No. 10 and its incredible reconstruction by renowned orchestrator Brian Newbould, revealing elements that have made Schubert one of the most beloved composers.

The framework of Symphony No. 10 began as a piano sketch, written by Franz Schubert in 1832 in the final weeks of his young life. The piece was only discovered and properly identified as Schubert’s composition in the 1970s, and then pieced together and orchestrated by Newbould. The completed work is very rarely performed, giving Columbus audiences a unique opportunity to hear this piece in its entirety.

NAKED CLASSICS host, the renowned music educator, performer and composer Paul Rissmann, presents the first half of the two-part program. Through the use of digital projection, live musical excerpts from the orchestra, and interviews with the musicians on stage he will first “strip down” Schubert’s work – and audiences will discover how this piano framework was transformed into a full symphony. In the second half of the program, David Danzmayr and the orchestra will perform the piece in its entirety, giving audiences new insight into the work.

“We were so thrilled with the success of our NAKED CLASSICS premiere this past October, and are looking forward to Paul’s return in April, ” said Executive Director Janet Chen. “To present Schubert’s Symphony No. 10, which is hardly EVER performed, we know our audiences will be treated to a once-in-a-life time experience that combines both entertainment and learning in a relaxing and fun atmosphere. This series is for anyone and everyone – whether you are a loyal ProMusica subscriber, or someone who is interested in history or wants to dip their toes into the classical music world. Everyone will enjoy the NAKED CLASSICS experience.”

Rissmann was born on the Isle of Bute, Scotland and is a composer, presenter and music educator. He currently resides in the U.K. and holds the position of Animateur for the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and is Children’s Composer in Residence for Music in the Round.

As a concert presenter, Rissmann has performed with many leading orchestras across the globe in America, Australia, Europe, India, Malaysia and the Middle East. Recent engagements include concerts with the New York Philharmonic, Glyndebourne Opera, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, and a tour of India with Nicola Benedetti and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

David Danzmayr previously worked with Rissmann at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra where NAKED CLASSICS was met with tremendous success.

Tickets for NAKED CLASSICS: Schubert 10 are $25 each, and seating is general admission.

The NAKED CLASSICS series receives generous support from The Columbus Performing Arts Prize and the Greater Columbus Arts Council. Additionally, the April 21 performance is presented by PNC Arts Alive.
